Summary Information
Phenotype: The Metallic gene controls the distribution of pigment granules in the surface and basal layers of the scales of drakes. Drakes homozygous (M/M) or heterozygous (M/m) for the dominant allele M have pigment granules in the basal layer only, and lack pigment granules in the surface layer. This results in a metallic appearance of the scales. Recessive alleles of the colorless gene are epistatic to Metallic; both c/c M/* and c/c m/m have translucent white scales.

In the absence of colorless, the Metallic gene produces the scale colors described below:

 M/*m/m
B/* D/* Drake Drake
SteelCharcoal

 M/*m/m
b/b D/* Drake Drake
CopperEarth

 M/*m/m
B/* d/d Drake Drake
ArgentDust
