Phenotype: The transformer gene affects sexual differentiation in drakes.
Chromosomally male drakes hemizygous for the recessive transformer allele (tr/Y) are transformed into phenotypic females, lacking the throat sac entirely.
Transformed males are sterile. Internally, the gonads exhibit a partial transformation towards ovaries ("ovotestes") but do not produce gametes.
All internal reproductive accessory structures are entirely female.
Transformed males will mate as females, but do not lay eggs.
Because the recessive transformer allele is sex-linked, and tr/Y males are sterile,
it has not been possible to produce homozygous tr/tr females, so their phenotype is unknown.
