Phenotype: Wasting disease is an inherited disorder of metabolism in drakes.
Drakes homozygous for the recessive wasting disease allele (wd/wd) typically exhibit symptoms prior to maturity.
Symptoms include lethargy, sleepiness, skeletal muscle weakness, and enlarged heart. Premature death from cardiac failure is common.
Biochemically, there is a 10- to 30-fold excess of carnitine in excreted waste. Plasma carnitine levels are reduced.
Symptoms improve if affected drakes are treated daily with oral L-carnitine.
