Phenotype: Gasping sickness is an inherited disorder of metabolism in drakes.
Drakes homozygous for the recessive allele (gasp/gasp) typically exhibit symptoms prior to maturity.
The disease gets its name from the phenotype of episodes of respiratory distress.
Other symptoms include lethargy, failure to thrive, and dehydration.
Symptoms are made worse by high protein intake.
Biochemically, the symptoms include methylmalonic aciduria, long chain ketonuria, and intermittent hyperglycinemia.
Limited protein intake and treatment with vitamin B12 reverses the biochemical disorder and all symptoms.
