Phenotype: Shaking sickness is an inherited disorder of metabolism in drakes.
Drakes homozygous for the recessive allele (sks/sks) typically exhibit symptoms prior to maturity.
The disease gets its name from the common symptom of seizures.
Other symptoms include poor appetite, failure to thrive, and hypotonia.
Biochemically, the symptoms include elevated amounts of malonic, methylmalonic, and succinic acids in excreted waste.
Symptoms are relieved by a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet.
