Summary Information
Phenotype: Mutations in the dancer gene cause an inherited disorder of metabolism in drakes. Drakes homozygous for the recessive allele (dcr/dcr) typically exhibit symptoms prior to maturity. The disease gets its name from the unusual phenotype of involuntary writhing and twisting of limbs in affected drakes. Other symptoms include seizures and lethargy. Symptoms are made worse by a high-protein meal; these drakes improve on a low-protein diet.
